Thirty cylinders at 25 lb apiece comes to 750 lb of charge — a retrofit-programme quantity rather than a single call-out. R-449A exists for that work: a service blend for R-404A and R-507 kit, brought in under the HFC phase-down rather than to open a new chemistry. Technicians who saw US R-22 production end will recognise the shape of the job.

What you are charging is a zeotropic blend of HFC and HFO components. It sits in the lowest ASHRAE safety class: lower toxicity, no flame propagation under test conditions. That is not the same as harmless — it displaces oxygen in a pit or a cold store, and hot surfaces or an open flame break it down into acid gases. Typical duty is supermarket low- and medium-temperature racks, remote and self-contained cases, walk-ins, reach-ins, cold stores, ice machines and transport units.

Charge liquid, every time. Draw from the liquid port and meter into the low side, or weigh into the high side with the system off; vapour off the top fractionates the blend, and what runs afterwards is no longer R-449A. Glide is real — read superheat and subcooling against dew and bubble points, and expect to retune the valve. Take the lubricant and component checks from the equipment manufacturer's retrofit guidance. Store upright and secured, out of sun, caps on. Recover into dedicated cylinders; venting is illegal.
