Twenty cylinders is a programme, not a callout. Quantities like this get bought against a survey — charge weights totted up, recovery cylinders and labour booked, conversions sequenced store by store over weeks. Work out the charge per machine first, so 500 lb lands against a real list of cases and racks rather than a guess. Stage full and empty cylinders apart, arrange returns before the empties pile up, and account for recovered R-404A separately from incoming stock.

The blend itself is a four-component HFC/HFO mix, classified A1: non-toxic, non-flammable. It went into service as the lower-GWP stand-in for R-404A and R-507 across commercial refrigeration — supermarket low- and medium-temperature racks, display cases, walk-ins, cold stores, reach-ins, ice machines, transport units. Pressures and capacity land near enough to R-404A that the compressor, pressure controls and POE charge usually stay. With the HFC phase-down squeezing the high-GWP blends hardest, that retrofit path is where most of this gas goes.

Charge liquid, always. Draw off the liquid port and meter into the low side through a restrictor, or weigh into the high side with the system off — vapour-charging a zeotropic blend fractionates it, and what runs after is no longer R-449A. Top-ups follow the same rule. Glide is real, so set superheat and subcooling off dew and bubble points, not one saturation value, and expect to retune the valve. No flammability controls needed, unlike the A2Ls going into new builds. Keep cylinders upright and secured, out of the sun. Relabel every nameplate you touch.
