Ten cylinders at 30 lb apiece, 300 lb of R-134a in total. Buying at this depth is rarely about one job. It is a shared shelf several vans draw from, or a facilities department servicing its own chillers and display cases instead of calling a contractor out. Sign cylinders out as they leave, log the weight against the machine, and the shelf tells you who took what.

As a refrigerant, R-134a is single-component rather than a blend. Blends carry glide and have to be charged as liquid; a single component does not, so vapour or liquid both work and superheat and subcooling come straight off a pressure-temperature chart. It is non-flammable and low in toxicity, which is much of why it held the medium-temperature default while the mildly flammable alternatives were still arriving.

It displaced R-12 across light-vehicle air conditioning, bottle coolers, vending, water coolers, transport units, medium-temp racks, and a deep population of centrifugal and screw chillers. The lubricant changed with it: equipment built for R-134a runs on synthetic oil rather than the mineral oil R-12 tolerated. Store cylinders upright and secured, out of sun and away from heat. Buying against a maintenance calendar beats buying the day a compressor comes apart.
