30 LB R134A (R-134A) Refrigerant Gas

R-134a took over from R-12 as HFCs displaced CFCs, and it has been the service refrigerant for automotive air conditioning, medium-temperature commercial refrigeration and chillers ever since. New designs have been moving towards lower-GWP options, but the installed base still needs charging. Match the cylinder to the data plate: run R-134a where the equipment was built or retrofitted for it, and never mix refrigerants in a system.

Charging is simple compared with a blend. R-134a is a single-component refrigerant, so nothing fractionates and a vapour charge leaves the composition alone — pressure and temperature track one curve, with no dew-point and bubble-point arithmetic to do. Head pressure sits somewhat above R-12 at the same condensing temperature, and well below R-410A, so check the system's own design pressures before any retrofit.

Safety is undramatic but not nothing. The gas is non-flammable and low in toxicity, yet it is heavier than air: a leak pools in pits, plant rooms and low spaces and displaces oxygen. Ventilation, leak detection and whatever machinery-room rules apply still stand. On R-12 retrofits, mineral oil will not return with R-134a, so follow the equipment maker's lubricant spec. Recover, evacuate, then weigh the charge in: how far 30 lb goes depends on the system.
